Koeman hot on Barcelona radar

This was the club who was dubbed the ‘best team to play football ever’ as early as 2011.

Inside 10 years, they have gone from that to being drubbed 3-0 by AS Roma, 4-0 by Liverpool and 8-2 by Bayern Munich in Europe. Something has gone wrong and Bartomeu has promised, ironically to wring changes.

He should probably be looking at himself first. The president has made horror signings for record fees, given Barcelona their most humilating defeat, planned nothing for a squad overhaul and ate into Pep’s magic team, reportedly embezzled money from the board for personal gain in other investments, and most importantly appointed coaches who were never in sync with Barcelona’s football.

The tiki taka philosophy was always going to have its demise some day but Bartomeu has rushed the process. The appointment of Valverde and Setien who in their own right are good coaches, showed how little Bartomeu understands football and how little he cares about their football philosophy.

With the public demanding answers now and tempers rising, he has finally realised a coach is needed who can bring back technical smooth passing football. The names of Xavi, Pochettino and Koeman has doing the rounds to replace Setien but Xavi one understands is not ready yet while Poch despite being brilliant doesnt fit the Barcelona costume.

Koeman on the other hand is a club legend and would know all about the culture and philosophy at the club. He has been tipped as the favorite to take over, but the other small question he might ask – Is Messi staying?
