Barcelona has scoured the transfer market to strengthen their right-back position since Xavi continues to place a premium on that position
The Catalans appear to have finally zeroed in on Joao Cancelo, who was their original objective, after pursuing players like Pablo Maffeo, Ivan Fresneda, and Juan Foyth. Cancelo is about to join Barcelona as their newest acquisition. According to reports, the process is almost finished, and Barcelona and Manchester City anticipate finalising their deal over the course of the coming week.
The transaction will be a loan with a permanent purchase option for Barça. A right-back was something that Xavi fiercely demanded, and Cancelo has always been the player he wants to sign first.
It was already anticipated that Cancelo would leave this summer following their falling out. Barcelona is in the best position to sign the player because personal terms are supposedly already settled, and the last obstacle of reaching an agreement with Cityzens is no longer insurmountable.
The Premier League winners wanted to offload him permanently, but given the state of the economy, Barça’s ability to pay Cancelo’s transfer cost up front was questionable. However, the 29-year-old’s adamant desire to sign for the La Liga champions has been a major factor, and an agreement is now in the works.
As was already mentioned, Cancelo’s move to Barcelona seems to be taking place in accordance with the loan formula with a buy option. Due to the departure of Ousmane Dembele, Barcelona will see a fair play margin increase of €26.2 million, which made room for Cancelo to join.
