Xavi plans to deploy new signing Gundogan up ahead behind Lewandowski

The purchase of Ilkay Gundogan is a major victory for FC Barcelona

The former Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City midfielder has been playing at the peak of his game lately, so the team’s acquisition of him on a free transfer is nothing short of a significant victory.

As a result, Xavi’s initial wish—to have an experienced midfielder manage his team the following year—was granted. Gundogan’s acquisition has almost unlocked a tricky combination for Barcelona. Now that Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, and Gavi are all undroppable, there are concerns about how Xavi will deploy Gundogan.

But because of the German’s effectiveness, SPORT journalist Jordi Carne claims that the management is picturing him in the most advanced role. He will collaborate closely with Robert Lewandowski, with whom the midfielder previously shared Borussia Dortmund. The journalist also claims that Franck Kessie and Sergi Roberto (if he stays) will serve as backups to Pedri, Gavi, and de Jong in the midfield.

And if that is the case, Pablo Torre and Nico Gonzalez will essentially need to leave on loan in order to hunt for possibilities. It should be mentioned that Gudogan has a contract with Barcelona through 2025, with a one-year extension option. The midfielder’s contract with the Blaugrana includes a €400 million release clause.

Since winning the historic triple with Man City last season, it’s fair to say that the midfielder had his heart set on joining Barcelona and no other team. After completing one aspect of their summer transfer strategy, Barcelona will now focus on selling players to raise further funds and bringing in a pivot midfielder.
