The transfer of Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain has been discussed

The 26-year-old moved from Borussia Dortmund to Camp Nou in a deal worth an initial £90 million, becoming one of the most expensive players in the world.

Due to various injury issues, his six seasons in Spain have only resulted in 127 La Liga appearances (an average of little over 21 games each campaign), and he has yet to score more than eight league goals in a single season. Under the guidance of club icon Xavi, Barcelona won the La Liga title with ease in 2022–23, but Dembele was limited to just 16 starts and managed just five goals in 25 games.

Barcelona has been in talks with Dembele about extending the two-year deal he signed in July 2022, when he was heavily associated with leaving the club, despite his inconsistent play and problems to keep in shape. However, 90min is aware that the negotiations have not gone as well as Barcelona or Dembele would have liked, which has rekindled PSG’s longtime interest. Sources have stated that PSG and Barcelona have spoken about a possible transfer for Dembele, who could be had for as little as £42.9 million (€50 million) before July 31 due to a release clause in his contract.

Beyond that time, the amount rises to €100 million, though Barcelona is aware that it’s doubtful they could get that kind of money for a player who is constantly injured. As long as negotiations go well, Dembele could still extend his deal at Camp Nou, but Barcelona would also be willing to transfer him if the price was right. The Catalan giants’ financial difficulties are well known, and in an effort to raise money this summer, they have already placed wing counterparts Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres available for transfer.

PSG is preparing for Kylian Mbappe’s exit, whether it happens this summer or next. Despite the staggering £259 million offer PSG received from Saudi Pro League team Al Hilal, Mbappe is not now interested in discussing a transfer to the Middle East. Instead, he wants to join Real Madrid to realise his childhood aspirations. According to additional sources who spoke to 90min, PSG’s interest in Dembele is unrelated to Mbappe’s departure because they do not view the pacy winger as a comparable replacement for the 2022 World Cup Golden Boot winner.
