Barcelona will need a replacement in the squad for the second half of the season because Memphis Depay will be leaving the team soon
Depay is expected to sign a contract with Atletico until 2025 after moving there. His transfer will net Barca up to €4 million, giving the team some much-needed financial breathing room. They will bet on the ability to organise a new forward with the available cash, probably through a loan.
If Barcelona does decide to go with a loan arrangement, a more long-term arrangement will probably be set up in the summer.
Yannick Carrasco is a player that might be used for either move. Depay’s impending transfer to Atleti has put Barca’s earlier plans for a swap deal involving the Belgian winger and Depay out to pasture.
The likelihood of a transfer at the end of the current campaign has increased, and it has been reported that Barcelona will have the opportunity to acquire Carrasco in the summer. There is a provision in the Depay agreement that gives Barcelona the option to sign Carrasco for “less than €20m.”
With Barcelona’s current financial situation, they might try to use this provision for Carrasco while selling players like Raphinha or Ferran Torres to boost the team’s finances. If finished, it might represent a good deal for the club.
