Why Barcelona Need More Players Like Arturo Vidal

Former Barcelona manager, Gerardo Martino believes the club needs more players like Arturo Vidal.

While many fans had written the Chilean off as a misfit in the Blaugrana system, Martino thinks Vida’s influence is underplayed.

He said, “I have a particular weakness for Vidal. If I could have, I’d have brought him to Barcelona in that moment (2013-14). They are very personal decisions. We have to see how he feels with his family. I would ask if, since Xavi and Iniesta left, Barca’s DNA has been represented so faithfully. I’m of the idea that Barca should have another alternative (type of) player.”

Barca are known to only employ technically proficient players who are capable of playing in tight spaces. Vidal is more dynamic on the pitch, capable of doing the dirty work in unorthodox fashion. He arrived from Bayern Munich in 2018 and has been used in various degrees by both Ernesto Valverde and Quique Setien. He also has 8 goals and 2 assists in 42 appearances this campaign, marking his importance to the team.

At 33, he is likely to be moved on in the near future but one can see exactly what he brings to the table. His contract is also due to run out in a year’s time while Setien’s future at the club is highly uncertain.
