Barcelona president Joan Laporta says the club still hopes Ousmane Dembele signs a new contract

Dembélé declined to accept Barcelona’s contract extension demands during the winter, prompting speculation that the attacker might be permanently benched by the club.

Despite criticism from some members of the media and fans, Barcelona manager Xavi has stayed with Dembélé. He was a critical decision-maker in permitting Dembélé to play this season.

The 24-year-old was originally held out of contention towards the end of the January transfer window, but after failing to obtain a move away, Xavi Hernandez has turned to him in recent weeks, and he has answered with some really excellent displays.

“Dembele knows our offer and that we have always wanted him to stay. We hope that at the end of the season he will reconsider it,” Laporta said

Pedri is another player who has been in excellent form in recent games, and Laporta feels he has the potential to go all the way to the top.

“He is destined to be one of the best players in the world, if not the best, but he knows that he has to work hard,” he commented.

Barcelona have scored four goals in their past three games – away at Valencia and Napoli, as well as at home against Athletic Club – and Laporta is pleased with Xavi’s performance as head coach.
