Following his loan stint at FC Barcelona, defender Clement Lenglet has been released by Tottenham Hotspur, the club has announced

The center-back is now expected to rejoin the team after the Lilywhites made the decision not to purchase him on a permanent basis.

In the summer of last year, Lenglet moved from Barcelona to Tottenham on a season-long loan. The French international played frequently for the Lilywhites during a pretty successful stint in England. Lenglet played 35 times for Spurs in all competitions during the 2022–23 season, and he even scored a goal and provided two assists.

It was rumoured that Tottenham and Barcelona were in negotiations for him to join them permanently this summer, and that the Catalans wanted to complete his exit as quickly as possible in a deal costing between €10 and €15 million.

Tottenham, however, has stated that they will not be signing him permanently, at least not at this time, and that he will return to Barcelona instead.

Barcelona was hopeful that Lenglet’s move to Tottenham would become permanent since they needed to sell players quickly. But for the time being, it doesn’t appear as though that possibility is likely. It is unknown if there would be discussions between the two clubs in the upcoming weeks concerning a permanent transfer. Lenglet appears to be returning to Barcelona for the time being.
