Arsene Wenger identifies some biggest problems at Barcelona.

The Blaugrana were thrashed 4-1 by PSG at Camp Nou on Tuesday in their Champions League round-of-16 draw.

It was a disastrous night for Koeman’s side and former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the Catalan giants need a major rebuild and also overcome their financial problems.

‘I’ll congratulate Paris Saint-Germain tonight and especially Mbappe. He has shown intelligence, skill and confidence,’ Wenger told BeIn Sports.

‘I would say for Barcelona it hurts. We have all seen great Barca teams.

‘But in our job if you are two years wrong by buying players, you have a big problem in a big club.

‘Barcelona is wrong for more than two years. That shows they have a big task to rebuild the team and not be short-term.

‘For PSG, they’ve been in the final last year. Now they can come back, they’ve shown maturity, class and organisation.

‘They will be one of the favourites now to win the competition.’

Wenger on whether Barcelona should extend Lionel Messi’s contract at the end of this season.

‘I think Barcelona when you read the papers, they are €1.1billion down,’ Wenger further added.

‘So they have two handicaps, they have to rebuild the team and they have no money.

‘I don’t know how they can do it. The young players they have at the moment in the team are not strong enough to come back to a top, top level.

‘To me, it looks like this is a job of three or four years for Barcelona to come back.

‘To first come back to a good financial situation and then they have a choice to make: do they extend Messi or not?

‘If we extend Messi today at Barcelona that means we have no money at all for anybody else.’

Antoine Griezmann Had No Excuses For PSG Defeat

Antoine Griezmann Had No Excuses For PSG Defeat

Antoine Griezmann did not offer any excuse for Barcelona’s 4-1 defeat to PSG.

Kylian Mbappe aboslutely smashed Barca’s hopes with a hat-trick and Moise Kean knocked in an easy header at Camp Nou.

“They were superior and the scored goals,” Griezmann said. “We had chances but it was not our best game. You need to be at your best against these type of sides. We were not today.

“It’s not the image we want to give, of course. We have to work hard, fight until the final second. It was not a good game, it was a bad game, and we have to work hard and move forward.”

Barca still have a chance to turn things around but it will be next to impossible in Paris in March.

On the return leg Griezmann added, “We will go there to try and win, to get through. We know it’s complicated but go we won’t go there just to visit.

“Against these teams need an almost perfect game and didn’t do that today. There was a moment when we were better … but we don’t like games like this. It’s hard conceding four at home. Now for the second leg.”

Koeman talks Messi, Mbappe, Neymar, PSG and more

Ronald Koeman sounded positive ahead of their acid test against PSG.

Koeman on the first leg

Well, first of all we are very excited to play this match in the Champions League even though we know it’ll be very difficult because PSG have a very strong team. It’ll be very interesting given our track record and the way we have been improving over the last few months and for them because of their quality. It will be two interesting and beautiful matches.

Koeman on Pique

Gerard’s looking good. He’s been training with us for 4-5 days and the feeling is good regarding how his physical level is but I still have one more day to decide. He’s been out for a long time, we’ll talk and we’ll decide tomorrow.

Koeman on the Barca defense

Any of our defenders that are fit we can put in the team. I think they’ve had good games, there’s been some individual errors but that’s part of football. I have no doubts about our players who know how to defend against a strong team such as Paris. It will be a very tactical game, we know how to dominate and defensively know how to stop their individual stars. Of course, it will come down to details and we’ll see who I decide to play in central defense.

Koeman on Neymar’s injury

I think we always need to protect these types of players. It could be Neymar, it could be Messi, it could be Ronaldo. I think they allow us to enjoy their individual quality. Referees should make an effort to protect them, but football is a contact sport and sometimes they get an ugly foul.

Koeman on Araujo

It’s true Araujo hasn’t practiced and I don’t think he’ll make it. Any player who’s in the squad list has options to play.

Koeman on UCL dreams

I already said after this draw that I believe in my team, I believe that we have a lot of quality players. I think we have improved in our style of play and results but during the draw I was thinking this is a very equal match-up. We are very ambitious ahead of this match, we are aware that our confidence has been boosted and our chances to win this match have grown and that’s important.

Koeman on PSG

For any team of course it’s important to have all your players available. Di Maria and Neymar are fantastic players that will improve them just like Ansu, Coutinho, Sergi, Araujo for us. We need to make sure other players are ready to step up. I’m not scared of anything because I have full trust in my players, I respect the opponent because they are strong, and their recent track record in the Champions League makes them one of the favorites. We will try and dominate the match, each team has positives and negatives and we have to try and capitalize on the negatives.

Koeman on Dembele’s progress

For me, I think more credit is down to the player. He has to work, the manager has to create a certain atmosphere within the group, needs to create practice sessions he thinks his players need, so I think regards the physical aspect, not just Ousmane, but a lot of players have improved. The efficiency of Dembele counts a lot on his physical state and also mentally he needs to deal with the pressure of being a Barca player. We helped him, but he himself has been most important in these changes.

Koeman on what approach he expects from PSG

We will see, it’s a knockout match over two games. When you play the first leg away you have to get the best possible result, try to score, so I think they’ll be thinking along those lines. They are also a team that wants to dominate, we like to have the ball and play and create opportunities with the ball. For us to keep the scoresheet to nil for our opponents is very important.

Koeman on what are PSG’s weaknesses

We analyze our opponents, whether they are a team that has a high press, where there are spaces, those are tactical things where we need to be prepared. We know of course about Mbappe and his speed and you try to control him. We need to make sure when we lose the ball we are good in defense.

Koeman on Messi vs Mbappe

I don’t think it’s a direct matchup between Messi and Mbappe. It’s a battle between two teams. Messi is the best player in the world and we’ll need him at his best form to win. For PSG, it’s Mbappe who is a very fast player, a player who can make things very complicated for any defense. We are going to have a beautiful game because you have to enjoy these players.

Koeman on how to defend Mbppe

Generally speaking, I’m not in favor of man-to-man marking for these types of players. We know where we can play, we know where we have players who can play between the lines. It’s important for us when we have the ball to be defensively ready for when we lose the ball. I think that’s an important aspect for us tomorrow.

Koeman on PSG talking about Messi

It’s not something I’m concerned about. I’m focused on having the players ready for the matches ahead of us. Messi is a Barca player, I have a lot of hope he will continue to play for us.

Koeman on Barcelona

I don’t see other teams better than Barcelona right now. But it’s not good to expect to win the Champions League when we have done a lot of changes this season. The team is at a high level and we can beat anyone.

Ousmane Dembele On How A New Fitness Regime Improved His Form

Ousmane Dembele On How A New Fitness Regime Improved His Form

Ousmane Dembele has been heavily criticised for his lack of professionalism at Barcelona.

He had to be disciplined multiple times off the pitch and was noted to have a lacklustre fitness schedule.

However, fans have seen an upturn in form recently. Dembele, happy with his progress, revealed how Barca coaches have helped.

“Physically I think I have changed,” Dembele said. “When I arrived here, I was very fragile.

“I was starting as a professional at Stade Rennais and Borussia Dortmund, I was very fragile, but I have come a long way and I found fitness coaches here and everything changed.

“I received advice, when to attack, when to be calm with the ball. I liked to move forward only when I had the ball, and they told me to wait and try to find a teammate and not dribble three or four rivals.”

Dembele praised Ronald Koeman as well for his influence on the Barcelona dressing room. The Frenchman continued,  “A lot of things have changed with [Koeman], especially regarding training and preparing for the matches,” Dembele noted.

“Physically, we feel very good. The training is both about quality, and also high intensity. I think [Barcelona] are in top form. It’s great that we are midway the season, we have objectives and we will do everything possible to win titles.”

The Bosnian midfielder was expected to play a big role at Camp Nou.

Miralem Pjanic joined the Catalan giants from Juventus last summer in a deal that saw Arthur go the opposite way.

The 30-year old midfielder has featured only five times in the La Liga this season but insisted that he will continue to fight for his place.

The Bosnian has found himself mostly on the bench under manager Ronald Koeman though he started six of all Champions League matches and is yet to register a goal or an assist for his new club.

“I have played at all the clubs I’ve been at and with all the coaches I’ve had. A situation like this has never happened to me. Of course it’s not easy, I accept it with great difficulty,” Pjanic told in an interview with Telefoot.

“I don’t have the exact reasons why I’ve not had the playing time I expected.

“I keep working and you have to respect the decisions that are taken, even if you don’t agree. I want to leave my mark at this club.”

“Well, we know that Leo is a decisive player,” the Barca head coach told reporters.

“He has been for many years, he is very concentrated. He’s excited, he’s happy and he’s been very effective in front of goal.

“He’s someone that when we make passes between the lines to find him it gives a load of depth for the rest of the players and makes them even easier for him.

“He has a great vision of play, so of course if we want to try and go through or aspire to win trophies having Messi at his best is vital, but we need also everyone else at the best. That’s very important.”

The Blaugrana faces Pochettino’s PSG in the Champions League round-of-16 first-leg fixture.

Lionel Messi Would Be Handed Perfect Conditions To Thrive At Manchester City

Lionel Messi Would Be Handed Perfect Conditions To Thrive At Manchester City

Manchester City would be an ideal destination for Lionel Messi, according to Pablo Zabaleta.

There has been heavy speculation over Messi’s eventual move to the Etihad Stadium.

He is out of contract in the summer and could be buoyed by the presence of Pep Guardiola in Manchester.

“If Lionel Messi decides to leave Barcelona and he wants to play in the best league then he has to experience the Premier League for himself,” Zabaleta told The Mirror. “It is something that will interest him – because every player I know always asks me what the Premier League is like.

“Leo has been in La Liga for so many years and I think it would be a huge attraction for him to experience English football. And Manchester City offer the perfect conditions.

“He knows Pep very well, he knows [sporting director] Txiki Begiristain and [chief executive] Ferran Soriano – and also Kun Aguero.

“It would be a big decision if Leo leaves Barcelona. But if that’s what he wants then it would be a good thing for him to go to a club that has people already there who can help him to settle

“When you have been at one club for so long, moving somewhere new can be very strange. I am sure clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus would also be interested in signing him, but it is my opinion that City would be the best place to go after Barcelona.”

Ronald Koeman hits out at Gerard Pique

Ronald Koeman hits out at Gerard Pique
Bildbyran

Ronald Koeman has scolded Pique over his referee comments.

Earlier this month Pique made headlines when he suggested that the majority of the referees are biased to the Madrid clubs as they belong from there.

His comments are to be reviewed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation to see if the veteran centre-back broke any organisation rules on honouring impartial respect for referees.

Gerard Pique said: “The other day a former referee said that 85 per cent of the referees are from Madrid.

“How are they not going to whistle in favour of Madrid? Even unconsciously, how are they not going to give more for one side than the other?

“I respect the professionalism of the referees and I know they try to do their best job, but when a moment of doubt comes…”

Coach Ronald Koeman admitted that it is not his concern if Pique gets banned and refused to be drawn on any such matters.

“It’s my problem if they sanction because of these statements, but he has enough experience to say what he wants,” he said.

“But you have to take care because, [even] with little [pushback], they can make you a problem.

“If you have to criticise, do so with respect so they can’t do anything to you.”

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi compared to an Aston Villa star

Can Grealish be actually compared to Lionel Messi?

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish is just Lionel Messi with a right foot claims Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The Villa captain is having a superb season with his hometown club and is regularly linked with all big European clubs especially Manchester United.

Martinez who was recently called up to Argentine squads has trained with Messi and rates Grealish as high as the Barca captain.

A post shared by Jack Grealish (@jackgrealish)

‘He [Grealish] is the most talented player I’ve ever seen,’ Martinez told talkSPORT.

‘He never gives the ball away.

‘When I see Grealish running, it’s always a shot on target or a corner for us. He will drive past two or three players.

‘I just see Messi with a right foot when he has the ball. You can’t get the ball off him.

‘He’s the most talented English player and I’m surprised he hasn’t played more games for England.

‘Messi is Messi, he’s the best ever. But in terms of training, when Jack has the ball, people don’t want to tackle him, they respect him, he can finish, he can chop, he can do everything.

‘When I train with Messi for the national team, it’s the same. Nobody wants to touch him, he chops people, he treats players like cones I see that with Jack here.’

Neymar frustrated to miss PSG-Barcelona tie

An injury has ruled Neymar out of the Champions League clash between PSG and Barcelona.

The Brazilian forward has fallen prey to yet another injury, something his career has rather been synonymous to. The player has now put out an Instagram post, emotionally expressing how it feels to be hated.

“The sadness is great, the pain is immense and the crying is constant,” Neymar posted.

“Once again, I will stop for a while doing what I love the most in life, which is playing football. Sometimes I feel uncomfortable because of my style of play, because I dribble and they constantly hit me.

“I don’t know if the problem is me or what I do on the field. It saddens me a lot. It saddens me a lot to hear from a player, coach, commentator or whoever the hell it is, that “you really have to hit him, “he falls”, “he cries”, “a child”, “spoiled” etc.

“It honestly saddens me and I don’t even know how much I can bear it. I just want to be happy playing football. NOTHING ELSE.”

Just a coincidental fact, Neymar has missed 6 of the last 7 seasons’ football games in this time period, which also happens to be his sister’s birthday.
