Barcelona Needs To Continue Fighting - Riqui Puig After Cup Final Defeat

Riqui Puig is motivated to keep fighting even after losing the Super Copa final against Athletic Bilbao.

Barcelona were taken apart by their rivals despite taking the lead twice through Antoine Griezmann.

After a 90th minute equaliser, Inaki Williams’ stunning strike ensured the first piece of silverware did not go to Barcelona. One could see the competitive setup Bilbao had with Marcelino as their coach.

Puig came on to play a few minutes in extra time after impressing against Real Sociedad in the semi-final. He is not really backed by Ronald Koeman but is seeing more minutes on the pitch recently.

Posting on Instagram after the game with a picture of him looking disappointed, read, “Hard to lose the Supercopa final when we were so close. It’s time to get up and continue fighting for all that remains this season, that’s why we’re Barcelona!”

Barcelona are third in the La Liga, three points behind Real Madrid and seven behind Atletico Madrid. With two games at hand, Atletico have the advantage but there are still 20 games left to play for Barca and Real. Koeman will have to get things under control fast if he is to close the gap with the leaders.

Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona loss the Supercopa De Espana final to Athletic Bilbao.

It also saw Messi send off with a red card but Koeman came to his rescue.

“I can understand what Messi did,” Koeman said afterwards.

“I don’t know how many times they fouled him, and it’s normal to react when they keep trying to foul you as a player who is looking to dribble with the ball, but I need to see it again properly.”

“Leo, after so many years in the elite of football, knows perfectly if he is in condition or not,” Koeman said.

“We spoke before, he said he was in condition to play the game, he has given his maximum and nothing else.”

“We are sad, disappointed by the result,” Koeman added. “We played the final to win and not to lose that, yes. But there is no time to get off. We’ll be playing soon, there’s a cup and a league, there’s no time for regrets.

“We have done positive things, we have improved. We have failed in the goals received. We have to be more forceful in defence. We must defend better in the area and not let the opponents think, they cannot control, turn and shoot easily. We can improve.

“My work … I give the maximum I can. My work is not very good if we had won, nor very bad for losing. We are on the way, there are positive things, although losing today is very hard.”

Koeman hoping Messi gets fit on time

Ronald Koeman has said that he is hoping for Lionel Messi to be fit in time for the Super Cup final.

“Yesterday, he trained on his own and today, we’ll see how he is to start with,” Koeman said in his pre-match press conference.

“He’ll have the final say. He knows his body. We have to wait and see how his niggles progress. We’re hopeful that he’ll play. If you have the best [players], you have a better chance of winning, and even more so if you have the best player in the world.

“The team is stronger with Leo in it, thanks to his creativity and efficiency – something that we sometimes lack. But if he’s not there, another [player] will play and we’ll play our game the same without him as with him.

“He has to be 100 percent. It’s not the final game of the season, though the decision is his.”

“It’s important because it’s a final and a trophy,” Koeman said on the match. “In order to show that we’re on track, it’s important to win things.

“We know it’s not the most important trophy we’re playing for, but it’s a trophy. Winning things allows you to say that you’re on the right track. One game isn’t so decisive, but it gives you confidence and it helps you to show that you’ve improved.

“We can show that we’re fighting. We’re very focused. Our opponents will be at their best. You don’t need to motivate [the players] for a final. We all have to be relaxed and confident and continue the plan that we have.

“There are so many reasons to win that you don’t need motivation. We don’t have to put more pressure on [the players].

Confirmed: Barcelona Will Have To Wait For Eric Garcia

Confirmed: Barcelona Will Have To Wait For Eric Garcia

Manchester City’s Eric Garcia will only head over to Barcelona next summer, confirmed Joan Laporta.

The Barca presidential candidate cleared up rumours of Garcia potentially joining this very month.

The Manchester City centre-back’s contract is due to run out in the summer. He has turned down every contract offer that was placed in front of him over the past year. His heart is set on returning to very club he grew up in.

Garcia was a part of the La Masia academy until he was 16. That was when he moved to England to test himself in foreign waters and even establish himself. He enjoyed a breakout 2019/20 season when City were without senior players in his position.

“We cannot give the seal of approval to the interim management committee to make decisions,” Laporta said after the meeting in the club’s offices on Friday. “We have concluded that if he [Eric García] is a player that is due to finish his contract, we have to wait. Now we would have to pay the transfer on top of the player’s salary.”

With Gerard Pique injured for several months, Garcia’s arrival could have really helped proceedings for Ronald Koeman. But instead of bidding heavy right now, Barca are content with waiting for the player until next summer.

Eric Garcia expected to leave Manchester City by the end of this transfer window.

The 20-year old defender has entered the final six months of his contract with the Cityzens.

There have been reports that he would return to his boyhood club Barcelona by the end of this month after agreeing on personal terms.

Garcia left Barca’s La Masia Academy to join City in 2017.

Pep Guardiola hopes that Garcia does not leave in this transfer window and stays until the end of the season.

“I hope not, but maybe Barcelona knows better than me, I don’t know,” Guardiola said about a possible deal.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen, but maybe it’s going to happen.”

Riqui Puig Refuses To Give Up On His Barcelona Career

Riqui Puig Refuses To Give Up On His Barcelona Career

Riqui Puig has refused to give up on his dreams of making it at Barcelona.

Ronald Koeman has refused to give the youngster much chance despite his impressive cameos last term.

Under Ernesto Valverde, the teenager broke into the senior team and seemed to have made some headway into his senior career. Unfortunately, Koeman does not see the same talent in him as the fans do.

With just 95 minutes of playing time recorded prior to Friday’s Super Copa victory over Real Sociedad, it seemed like his future was done. But Puig delivered by scoring the decisive penalty in the shootout to take Barca to the finals.

“I have never lost my smile,” he said. “I’m a pretty happy kid. Even though I don’t play much, things are going well: I have my family, my health. I can’t complain about anything

“If Ronald gives me minutes I will be grateful and I will take advantage of it, and if not I will keep working.

“Throwing in the towel? I’d never do that. After so many years at the club, and the journey of reaching the first team, I am never going to throw in the towel.”

Barcelona presidential election might be postponed

Barcelona presidential election may get postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This is according to one of the four Barcelona presidential candidates, Font,  who believes that the election will get delayed as many of the members are scared.

Font is the second-favourite to win the election collecting 4710 signatures to have his name on the final ballot.

The ongoing pandemic and the lack of options to vote remotely will lead to the election getting postponed to a later date.

“Not being able to vote in your town, for example, is more than an objective reason to say that it cannot be that only 10,000-15,000 members vote,” Font said to Deportes Cuatro.

“There will be legitimacy problems.  The members who wants to vote must be able to do so safely. We are in a very critical moment of the pandemic, and if the club does not provide solutions so that in two weeks we can vote in a different way than planned, the elections cannot be held.

“Many members are scared, they have told us so.”

With the January transfer window now open, Messi is free to agree contracts with other clubs.

Ronald Koeman has had his say on the matter now after reports came out Messi was left out of the squad for the match against Sociedad.

He said, “There were several players that had some discomfort the other day. That’s why we took Messi off, we took Frenkie and Dest off as well. It seems all of them are going to be available tomorrow. Also Araujo, we have the training session this afternoon as well to see if they are all fit to play tomorrow.”

He also spoke about the upcoming elections.

The important thing is to have everything in order, including the president. We are at a time in a world with Covid and you would have to accept if it does have to be delayed because health is the most important thing. We have to do the maximum to get back to living in a normal world.

Koeman being Koeman also stressed on how Barca can improve:

Be as clinical as we were the other day, that doesn’t always happen. I think the team is better from an attacking standpoint. We have more midfielders getting forwards and we are bringing players forward who have the ability to cause a lot of damage. The team is working well and it’s a burst of confidence for us and it’s shown in the last few games.

Koeman talks ahead of Supercopa De Espana

Ronald Koeman has talked about the upcoming challenges he faces as Barcelona boss.

Here is what he had to say on his next opponents Real Sociedad:

“We know they are a good team, they want to come and play and bring the pressure. Their manager has clear ideas. It was a good match we played with them recently, the first 45 minutes was great for us. The second half was tough as they reacted well. I think with the mentality of the two teams it’s going to be a very interesting match”, he said.

Despite struggling in La Liga, the Supercopa De Espana could prove to be a new start to a bright future and that is what Koeman would have us believe.

He said, “Teams in these semi-finals have the mentality and drive to do as much as possible to win the title. All four teams have a chance and we want to continue the image we’ve been putting up recently. We’ve improved, the team is growing in all aspects, and it’s another chance for us to show we’re on the right path.”

Do you think Koeman is the right man to lead the club?

Presidential elect Laporta has spoken about Messi staying for new stadium and voted against postponing the election.

He told Goal: “I hope Leo will still be there when we celebrate the 125th anniversary of Barcelona.

“It is not an easy task, because the renovation of the stadium will take at least two years.

“The whole thing around Messi is easier than the stadium. However, it would be great if we could celebrate Barcelona’s 125th birthday together with Messi. That would be a fantastic end to his career.”

The presidential candidate believes he is the right man to convince Messi to stay longer.

“Because I speak the truth. I have the most experience and ambition and in Messi’s eyes I am the most credible presidential candidate. I am proud that Lionel says all the promises I made to him have come true.”

Laporta also refused to postpone the election.

“The club can no longer be without president or board, without leadership. A decision was made and it should be January 24th. There are no objective reasons to postpone or suspend the elections. We have had the same conditions and obstacles as the others ”, said the manager in the presentation of his project.
