Griezmann – We are responsible for this mess

A mess it is at Barcelona.

How the mighty have fallen. From being the best football team ever to play the game a decade back, Barcelona are now struggling to get a glimpse of the top end of the table and losing to rivals rather badly.

One of their stars, Antoine Griezmann who has been rather poor since moving to the club has accepted that the players must own up as well.

“We’re responsible for what’s happening, we weren’t in the game.”said Antoine Griezmann.

“The result is shocking, but it will make us work on the mistakes. We gave a bad image to the fans tonight, and we will work to overcome the crisis with training and dedication.”

“The best way to get back on track, is to train, and train more. We have the talent and skilled players. We just have to believe in ourselves, and we will get out of these negative results.”Antoine Griezmann.

“Now we have an important game on Sunday, and we must win it.” said Antoine Griezmann.

Barcelona have now lost back to back games yet again this season and will have to really get their act together.

Messi vs Ronaldo: The Restart of a Rivalry?

0
Messi vs. Ronaldo: The Restart of a Rivalry?
Bildbyran

By the time you read this, the match between Barcelona and Juventus in the UEFA Champions League has already finished.

It is a highly-anticipated match not only because it is the clash between the two leading teams in the Champions League Group G (at the time of writing, the Barca only leads by 3 points) but also because both teams have a world-class football star in their squads: Messi and Ronaldo.

The reunion that put all soccer betting outlets on the lookout is the first in almost three years. Even if you only look at the odds, it’s clear that it will be a high-class clash: both teams are expected to score, and Barca is expected to score more than 1.5 goals. Whatever the result might be, it will surely be a worthy clash between the footballers considered among the best this year.

As we mentioned above, this will not be the first time the two football stars meet in the field. Actually, the two have met pretty frequently when both of them were playing in La Liga. The two players have met 35 times on the turf, either representing their respective clubs (Ronaldo played for three clubs while Messi only strengthened Barca’s ranks) and their countries.

Messi vs Ronaldo

The first time

The two players first met in 2008 when Barcelona met Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Neither of the two scored in the match – it ended in a goalless draw. It was the first leg of the teams’ Champions League match – in the second leg, Scholes scored Manchester’s winning goal. The match was played early in both players’ careers: Messi was 20 at the time, and Ronaldo, 23.

Messi did better in the CL

Out of the times the two football stars played against each other in the Champions League, the Argentine player has scored more times, and netted the more wins with the team: Messi has 16 wins on record against Ronaldo’s 10, and 22 goals against the Portuguese player’s 19.

Five of these games were in the Champions League knockout stage – but never before have they met in the group stage. Here, once again, Messi bested his Portuguese rival, leading by two wins, and 3 goals.

But Ronaldo did great in La Liga

El Clásico is the name given to one of Spain’s longest-running derbies involving Real Madrid and Barcelona, started with a match in 1902 (Barca won). In the last decade, the highlight of the derby was, without a doubt, pitting the two stars against each other.

Messi and Ronaldo met several times while both playing in La Liga but one of the first – and most memorable – of their meetings was in the November 2010 match where Messi set up two goals and played a pivotal role in Barca’s humiliating 5-0 victory. Next April, Ronaldo had his revenge: with a 103th-minute header, he snatched the cup right from under Barca’s noses.

A year later, the adversaries met again in the field – once again, Ronaldo had a memorable performance, scoring the 109th goal of the season, a record for La Liga until that time. And in 2013, he scored twice in Real’s 3-1 victory against Barca.

Friends? No, but they’re not enemies either

These long-running rivalries usually come packed with a long-running private relationship
between the players. Not in the case of Messi and Ronaldo, though. Speaking to the press last autumn about his relationship with Ronaldo, Messi revealed that they are not friends – simply because they never had the occasion to play for the same team.

“Each one of us has our own life and our own commitments”, the Argentine said when asked about their relationship, making it clear that he would not refuse if his long-term rival invited him for dinner.

Well, maybe after the pandemic ends…

Koeman frustrated with Barcelona

Another night, another loss for Barcelona.

Juventus defeated Barcelona 3-0 in the final game of the Champions League group stage and Koeman was left frustrated with his team.

“I think we lost the game in the first half-hour, as we got off to a bad start, didn’t play well defensively, were lacking aggression in midfield, and Juventus played well,” Ronald Koeman told Sky Sport Italia after the game in comments carried by Football Italia.

“They were particularly strong in the first half-hour and deserved to win.”

In what sounded like a desperate attempt to prove the mettle of his team, Koeman said they beat Juventus last time out.

“Don’t forget we played two games against Juventus, not just this one, as we won 2-0 in Turin. You should also look at the age of the squad and consider it an important lesson they have learned. They have to play with more conviction.”

Well, having half a billion pounds worth of player on the pitch and another half a billion on the bench is not exactly an average squad, Ronald.

Antoine Griezmann Embaressed By ‘Ugly’ Defeat To Juventus

0
Antoine Griezmann Embaressed By 'Ugly' Defeat To Juventus

Antoine Griezmann called Barcelona’s 3-0 defeat to Juventus last night as “ugly”.

Cristiano Ronaldo converted from the penalty spot twice and Weston McKennie connected a sublime volley to end Barca’s perfect run in the group stages.

The Blaugrana were nearly at full strength but could not cope with Juve’s attack. Griezmann reflected on the defeat, admitting it is not a good look for his team.

“We didn’t turn up. In the first half, they were all over us. We lacked everything: desire, attitude, wanting to run, to defend… everything was bad,” the Frenchman said.

“It’s our fault, we’re the ones playing. We have to want to work hard and want to play. We have to want everything. That’s the only way to move forward. We can look for excuse but it’s time to leave that to one side and work hard because the image created day is very ugly.”

The loss ensured Barca saw out the group as runners-up. They also lost against Cadiz last weekend, failing to climb up beyond eighth in the league table. Ronald Koeman has come under even more pressure as his team fails to get a winning run going.

Koeman warns players his patience is running short

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has warned his players that he’s angry with them.

Barcelona were getting on a good run before losing again over the weekend to relegation candidates Cadiz.

“I am unhappy. You have to analyze the defeats and it is different to lose as we did on Saturday or to lose to Atletico,” said the Barcelona head coach.

“You have to analyze how they mark us, how our attack is. I do not do theater and if I am pissed off I will say to the players.

“This is what I told them yesterday in the meeting before training because we cannot accept the goals that we conceded in in these games.”

Koeman was not happy with the Barcelona schedule congestion either.

“It’s a shame to lose another player due to an injury,” said Koeman. “He noticed something in the second half when he entered. He thought it was nothing.

“It’s a shame because he was fine, he has a past with injuries and he must recover and try to be well.

“It is one more reason to complain about the schedule. I don’t know who puts them on, but if you have to play on a Tuesday night in the Champions League, for the good of the Spanish teams you can’t put the game earlier like this.

“Especially to defend my players, who come home at three or four in the morning. We have played five away games at 9pm at night. It is not a help for a Spanish team if you have to play again in the Champions League on Tuesday. ”

Pirlo – Messi in a special part of his career

Barcelona take on Juventus tonight in the final group game of the Champions League.

Both teams have qualified for the next stage with the match only left to decide who will top the group. It is also the clash of the titans with Cristiano Ronaldo facing Lionel Messi for the first time since leaving for Juventus back in 2018!

The two players are in different parts of their career with Ronaldo more or less settled at Turin but Messi struggling through the turmoil at Barcelona.

Juventus coach Andreas Pirlo, is an intelligent man and has explained in short what he makes of the Messi situation and hoped, like the rest of us that the player gets back to his best in whichever club he plays for.

“[Messi] is at a special moment in his life, not in his career, because he had a problem this summer,” Pirlo told the press. “[It’s about] whether he would stay at Barcelona or not.

“But during games he has always shown his value. More than a football [issue], he probably has a psychological problem, but I don’t want to go into it, as it has nothing to do with us.

“Messi is a phenomenon and he has shown it.”

Ousmane Dembele Picks Yet Another Injury

Ousmane Dembele Picks Yet Another Injury

Ousmane Dembele has picked up another injury ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League clash against Juventus.

After several muscle issues, Dembele has only made 86 appearances since signing for Barca in 2017.

Test results showed that it is a hamstring pull this time with no return date set yet. Ronald Koeman will be disappointed with this bit of news, given how his team is struggling for form right now.

Dembele managed to stay injury-free this season, scoring four and laying out 2 assists in 12 appearances. It finally seemed like he was making up for lost time when he hits the rehabilitation room once again.

Barca’s unfotunate domestic form luckily has not translated to the European fixtures. They are top of group G with 5 wins in 5. After beating Juventus 2-0 at Camp Nou, they are expected to put the pressure on again at Turin.

Of course, this time, Cristiano Ronaldo will not be absent. Finally, we will get to see both him and Lionel Messi clash in a top fixture other than the El Clasico. Dembele would have been a good outlet either on the left flank.

His pace, directness and creativity would have caused some problems for the Juve defence but now Philippe Coutinho will have to shoulder that responsibility. The Brazilian has not been perfect either but at least is available for selection.

Former agent explains how Messi could consider joining PSG

Former agent explains how Messi could consider joining PSG

Former agent Josep Maria Minguella believes Messi wants to reunite with Neymar.

Messi would be a free agent by the end of this season and this would help Manchester City who are currently the frontrunners in getting his signature.

His former agent Minguella once represented the Argentine and was significant in bringing Messi to the Camp Nou.

“One thing is certain, Neymar’s best years in soccer, the moment when he was most fulfilled, was when he was at Leo’s side at Barça,” Minguella said.

“They won everything together, had a lot of fun and enjoyed themselves together on the field.

“Leo also wants to play again with Neymar. The desire is mutual. He has been trying to get Neymar back at Barça for several years. On several occasions, he has suggested it to his managers. There is a common will and desire to be teammates again because they are competitors. They know that they will have more opportunities to win titles by being together. But at the moment, there is nothing concrete.”

“For the moment, no one knows what he will do,” Minguella said.

“Not even him. Leo is not going to suggest or say anything until he is sure of himself. He had a very bad experience with his false start this summer and he doesn’t want to go through it again. My impression is that he feels very well in Barça and that he will wait for the result of the presidential election on January 24th. Depending on the new president’s sports project, he will decide whether to negotiate an extension or to go free.

“It is a possibility. There is Neymar, Di Maria, many Spanish-speaking players. But I think he hasn’t even thought about it today. His priority at the moment is to see if he can stay at Barça with a sports project that will bring the club back to the top of world soccer. One thing is certain, it will be him and only him who will decide whether or not to stay.”

Individual Errors Costing Us Games – Sergio Busquets Repents Cadiz Loss

1
Individual Errors Costing Us Games - Sergio Busquets Repents Cadiz Loss

Sergio Busquets blamed individual defeat for 2-1 defeat to Cadiz.

Barcelona succumbed to an embarassing defeat due to some shocking bit of defending.

Along with Ronald Koeman, Busquets questioned the performances of some players. “Individual errors have cost us a lot of points,” Busquets said after the game. “The team are different in the Champions League.

“In the last few games, mistakes have defined the match and it becomes more difficult. We cannot blame attitude or commitment, but starting like this makes things difficult.”

After Saturday’s defeat, Barca sit eighth in the table, six points behind rivals Real Madrid and twelve points behind leaders, Atletico Madrid.

“It’s worrisome to suffer so many defeats,” Busquets added. “The more points we drop, the further we’ll fall from the top positions, which are where we aim to be.

“We reacted today, but when we concede two goals it’s harder. When it seemed that we had a chance, we made another mistake and complicated things.”

It was always going to be difficult for Koeman to turn things around following a period of disparity at the Camp Nou. Player morale is at an all-time low and it could take a while before this Barca side is fully thumping opponents once again.
