Are Xavi’s Barcelona the Real Deal?

Are Xavi’s Barcelona the Real Deal?

There were some questions raised when Xavi Hernandez was named as Barcelona’s manager on November 6 2021, considering his relative lack of experience and given the scale of the task ahead of him. But in the five months since, he has steadily gone about proving those doubters wrong. In La Liga, Xavi has amassed 13 wins, four draws and a loss in his 18 games in charge, while also leading them to a Europa League Quarter-final berth.

Performances have vastly improved since the Spaniard took over the reins from Ronald Koeman, highlighted most by their 4-0 demolition of arch-rivals Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in March. It is extremely unlikely Barca will challenge Real for the title this season, Xavi looks set to guide Barcelona to a second-place finish and cement Champions League football this year, with their odds as low as 1/100 according to the best betting sites, which had looked in doubt after a rocky start to the season.

Barca’s woes under Koeman are a thing of the past

Ronald Koeman’s reign as Barcelona manager will not be fondly remembered by Culers. His 14 months in charge were riddled with poor results, weak performances and although out of his control, massive financial woes. Koeman was sacked following their 1-0 defeat at Rayo Vallecano in October, and spoke to Dutch newspaper AD about his time at the club.

He said: “Barcelona didn’t give me the same time as Xavi. It is still painful for me. I was working with many injured players. Now Pedri is back in shape. Ousmane Dembele’s back. Every coach needs time and patience from the board.

“[Joan] Laporta told me a thousand times that Xavi would not be his coach because he lacked experience. But I was not Laporta’s coach. I had that feeling from the first moment. After he was elected there was no click. There was a lack of the necessary support from above.

“I really wanted to succeed at Barcelona, but I realised that Laporta wanted to get rid of me because I was not appointed by him. You won’t see me at Camp Nou for a while, I can’t do that yet. With this president, I can’t pretend that nothing happened.”

While it is clear Laporta was trying to remove Koeman for months before he was finally relieved of his duties, all signs seem to point to the fact that the Barcelona President was right to make the move. When Xavi joined the club, Barca were languishing in ninth place in the league, and since he has joined he has got them all the way up to second place with six wins in their last six.

Laporta made it clear how happy he is with is new manager, telling the club’s official media: “Xavi has responded magnificently well to the opportunity that Barcelona have given him because he is a coach who knows the club, who loves the club, who respects the club’s decisions and who has the personality not to be influenced. He is clear about how we have to play and he is a hard worker, he loves football and that makes him live constantly what Barcelona is and what the team is. I’m very happy to have a coach like Xavi.

The famous El Clasico win

When a young manager gets a big job, fans are always looking out for them to provide a big signature win early on in their tenure to prove they were worth the risk. There is no doubt that the 4-0 victory in El Clasico at the Bernabeu on March 20 was that signature win for Xavi. His side were absolutely sensational, and remarkably, it’s fair to say the scoreline flattered their opponents. In reality, it could have been far more than four. Goals from Ronald Araujo, Ferran Torres and a brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave the Blaugranes the victory on a day where they outclassed Real Madrid in all facets.

After the game, Xavi said: “I don’t know if we can win the title, we can’t rule out anything. Maybe we’re a bit late, but this is a very big win for us. We were much better than Real Madrid. We played almost as a home team in the ground. It’s a day to enjoy, not only as a Barca manager but also a fan. We could easily have scored five or six. We changed our negative dynamic of losing the last few Clasicos.” As Xavi said, it may be too late to compete with Real Madrid for the title this year, as they find themselves 15 points back with a game in hand on their rivals, but the future was always in mind when Xavi was appointed, so this year is somewhat of a free hit for him.

Xavi getting the best out of his January transfers

Barcelona’s incredible resurgence in form has coincided with their return to the transfer market. Last year, Barca spending any money on players seemed completely impossible. But in January, they returned to the transfer scene. At the unveiling of Torres, who cost the club €55 million, Laporta said: “We still have our status in the transfer market. Everyone can get ready because Barca are back; the arrival of Ferran shows that. We’re a reference. Barca’s resurgence is a reality and the football world has realised that.” This warning would have scared Barca’s biggest rivals, knowing they can compete for any player in the world. They followed that up by signing Aubameyang on a free transfer and Adama Traore on loan from Wolves. Torres and Aubameyang have been nothing short of sensational since they joined, with the Gabonese forward netting eight times in his first nine La Liga appearances, and Torres scoring four and getting three assists in his 10 Barcelona league appearances. Traore hasn’t been quite as prolific as the other two, but his raw pace and strength has shown to be dangerous for La Liga defences in flashes. If Xavi can get proper backing in the upcoming summer window, and build on what he has already started at the club, he could lead Barcelona back to battling it out with Europe’s elite clubs.

Joan Laporta has blamed season-ticket holders for Frankfurt drama

Barcelona were beaten 3-2 by Eintracht Frankfurt and knocked out of Europa League.

The match was played in Camp Nou where the away team were allotted 5000 tickets but over 30000 fans poured into the stadium.

Nearly half of the 79,468 in attendance were Frankfurt fans and apparently, the Barcelona fans sold their tickets.

Club president Joan Laporta has blamed the season-ticket holders for this embarrasment.

“The club is not to blame for what happened against Eintracht, but it is responsible,” Laporta said at a press conference.

“We didn’t sell tickets to German fans beyond the 5,000 away tickets. Sales from Germany weren’t allowed and there were many people trying to buy tickets from there. The system of control worked up to a point, but some organised groups were able to breach the mechanisms in place.

“We inherited the system from the previous board. We thought it could work but we have seen that for special games it doesn’t.

“Tickets will now be non-transferrable for non-domestic matches and high-risk games. We are working on other measures so that it does not happen again.”

Barcelona’s hopes of chasing the La Liga title seems to be all over now.

Last week, the Blaugrana suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt at Camp Nou and eventually crashed out of the Europa League.

They encountered a home defeat against relegation-threatened Cadiz on Monday which is their first La Liga defeat in three months but effectively it ended the club’s title hopes for the season.

Xavi said on Monday: “We are angry, the players first, because we missed a golden chance to separate ourselves from those in the fight for the Champions League places and also to [keep] fighting for LaLiga, which we’ve practically said goodbye to now.

“I am annoyed and we have to be self-critical, myself first, as the coach. We’re playing to be in the Champions League, that’s why I am so angry. There was a lack of desire and determination. It’s been a really bad week and we have to turn things around as soon as possible. The players are pissed off. I’ve tried to encourage them after the match, but we must compete better. We have to look at what we have done wrong in defence and attack. On Thursday we have another final against Real Sociedad.”

Gerard Pique claims no conflict of interest in Supercup deals

Gerard Pique would be holding a press conference via Twitch after the Barca match.

Gerard Pique has admitted no conflict of interest in Supercup deals.

After audio emerged early on Monday morning which recorded him in conversation with the President of the Spanish Football Federation, many questioned the role of Gerard Pique in the deal.

He announced ahead of Barcelona’s match that he would be holding a press conference via Twitch after the match.

He said, “Here, the only illegal thing is that they took some private audio and leaked it to the press, you don’t have to be very smart to know who is behind it. It’s news that came out in 2019. Look at the archives. And it wasn’t news. Now in 2022 they have leaked the audio and now it’s news,” Pique told around 120,000 people who had tuned in.

Gerard Pique also defended his ability to be impartial in the deal.

“I bring an opportunity to the Spanish Football Federation. Before changing the format, the competition made €120,000, after the movement they are making €40m.”

“I know how to separate what is a commercial agreement with what I have done all of my life which is play football. I haven’t received any help. If you’re telling me that the competition itself will be affected by a commercial agreement, then you have no idea who I am. It’s throwing **** for the sake of throwing ****.”

“In these three years you can see whether there has been any effect on the competition or if they have helped us to win when Atletico Madrid or Real Madrid won.”

Do Barcelona Already Have Their New Legend To Take Messi’s Mantle

Do Barcelona Already Have Their New Legend To Take Messi's Handle

There were certainly plenty of tears at the Nou Camp when talismanic Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi decided to bring his long association with the club to an end, but with one legend leaving, Barca fans have quickly latched on to potential legend in the making, Gavi.

The 17-year-old La Masia product moved to their famed Academy set up aged 11 from Real Betis, and his rise through the ranks has been dramatic.  He was brought up to the Under 17 level whilst still only being aged 15, and then bypassed the next age group, moving straight to the Under 19’s.  The technical, but tough tackling attacking midfielder, featured only three times for Barcelona’s B team before being snatched up for use by manager Xavi Hernandez’s first team squad.

Having made his debut in the early 2021/22 La Liga clash with Getafe as a late substitute in the 2-1 victory, four games later he was rewarded by the manager with his first start in the home win over Levante and he justified Hernandez’s faith in him by turning in a Man of the Match performance and in his 26 starts and 11 substitute appearances so far, he has contributed two goals and five assists to their season and for those who like a flutter, you would get good odds from someone like SportNation on him increasing that tally before the end of the season.

With him quickly gaining plaudits and adulation at the domestic level, he then became Spain’s youngest ever international aged just 17 years and 62 days as he announced himself on that stage – he now boasts six caps – and has added Champions League and Europa League experience to his list of quickly gained achievements.

Gavi’s own idol growing up as a young boy may well have been Andres Iniesta, but plenty of pundits and football journalist’s, such as Guillem Balague, know that Lionel Messi himself is a great comparison to make given his own emergence as a 17-year-old.  The playing styles and individual strengths may well be different, but based on Gavi’s rise and progression so far, added to the clear career pathway he still has ahead of him, the parallels between both players are eminently obvious.

Given Gavi’s tender age and overall senior game experience, obviously there are also elements of his game that he still needs to work on.  Many would already point to his positional sense during a match and say there needs to be clear improvement on that front.

That is not a criticism of his work rate or work ethic, as that should be applauded, along with the simple fact he never tries to hide on a pitch as that is definitely a positive given his tender age.  But his desire and drive to be directly involved in play does see him drift an awful lot, and he definitely covers far more ground than is needed – so as he builds his experience and becomes a cleverer performer, he’ll better know when energy is needed to disrupt play, yet when to better conserve his energy so it can be used in more game changing moments.

Already contracted up at the club until 2023, but with a 15 million Euro buy out clause, Barcelona are already in the process of renegotiating his deal and there is no indication the youngster wants to move elsewhere – yet every indication he plans on being his own club legend in the very near future.

Club president Joan Laporta accuses fans for selling tickets to Frankfurt

Club president Joan Laporta accuses fans for selling tickets to Frankfurt

Camp Nou on Thursday night was full of Eintracht Frankfurt fans.

According to club president, only 5000 tickets were allotted for the away fans on that night.

Nearly 50% of the stadium was filled with Frankfurt fans with Joan Laporta claiming that the Barcelona fans themselves sold their tickets to the German fans.

“We put 34,440 tickets on sale. Barcelona fans should know that these tickets were available because season-ticket holders gave them up,” Laporta began.

“We put these tickets on sale with restrictions: they could not be bought with German credit cards or from any IP address in that country. We did all the restrictions we could, as we have done for the last six seasons.

“These tickets were located in the third tier, which ended up being all white in the hands of the Germans. Of the 37,746 season tickets registered at the stadium, many also ended up in the hands of German fans.

“There are two issues here: the tickets sold in the third tier and the season tickets which went to the rival fans. The club is not to blame for what happened. We are responsible for organising the match, and those who know me know that I am taking responsibility and taking action, and we will take action.”

Eintracht Frankfurt fans flooded Camp Nou in the Europa League clash.

Barcelona lost 3-2 in the return leg against Frankfurt this Thursday and were knocked out by the Europa League.

A reported 30000 Frankfurt fans made it to Camp Nou despite being allocated only 5000 tickets.

Barcelona vice-president Elena Fort apologised to all the partners about this unfortunate incident.

“We want to apologize to all the partners who came to the stadium. What we experienced yesterday is shameful and unacceptable. I deeply regret what happened.”

“The tickets were capped in Germany from the beginning. Barça had put the the necessary measures in place, and it has been demonstrated that they have not worked.”

“Barça, directly, has not sold tickets to the Germans,” Fort added.

She went on to explain how the fans could have found a loophole in buying these tickets.

“One of the ways that German fans were able to get the tickets was by contacting the resale companies which have Spanish credit cards to buy them. Surely, this is one way how they bought the tickets, but not the only one.”

“The club has to reflect upon this and make drastic decisions. One of the possible solution is to make the tickets nominal in future.”

Barcelona were knocked out by Frankfurt in the Europa League.

Both the sides finished with a 1-1 draw in their first leg in Germany and played the return leg at Camp Nou yesterday.

Thousands of Eintracht Frankfurt fans poured into Barcelona and the match eventually ended 3-2 in favour of the Bundesliga side.

Xavi’s men were knocked out of the competition but Garcia highlights the important thing Xavi brought to Barcelona.

Garcia said: “Above all the unity he has brought to the team. From the start he explained the ideas he had and the team is with him to the death.”

“That is being shown in our actions. We are coming from two more complicated games but the solutions he brings to us in every match are very important for us.”

“I am very happy due to the direction the team is going, we have improved a lot. Against Levante we fought to the end. In Frankfurt it was harder than we expected, but we are looking forward to the match. We have prepared for [today] and I hope that Camp Nou is full.”

Bayern Munich director denies Lewandowski transfer rumours to Barcelona

Bayern Munich director denies Lewandowski transfer rumours to Barcelona

Lewandowski’s current deal with Bayern expires at the end of next season.

Robert Lewandowski made headlines about his future at Baye rn Munich. There were some rumours that he will move to Barcelona in the summer.

The reports suggest that he has already agreed on personal terms with Barcelona over a potential move in the summer.

Lewandowski’s current deal with Bayern expires at the end of next season. The Polland international has no intention of continuing his spell at Allianz Arena.

However, in an interview with PrimeVideo, the Bayern Munich chairman has squashed rumours of Bayern selling Lewandowski in the summer.

Kahn told PrimeVideo (h/t Fabrizio Romano), “We’ll definitely have him with us for another season. We’re not crazy to discuss a transfer of a player who scores 30-40 goals for us every season.

Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic have both been criticised for their questionable signings that have not been able to make an impact at Bayern.

Barcelona are not likely to give up easily, and are reportedly ready to match Bayern’s contract extension offer.
